SAND Journal Submission Guidelines

SAND is an international literary journal based in Berlin that publishes two print issues per year. Our contributors come from all over the world and include established and emerging writers, poets, artists, and translators. We look for work that is fresh, well written, accessible, and diverse, as we take pride in producing a beautiful journal that can be enjoyed by a wide, multi-lingual audience.  We’re particularly interested in writing from perspectives that are generally underserved in literature, including work by women, people of color, people from the LGBTQ community, and people from the wider international writing community. We’re always excited about new submissions, so don't be shy; send us your best work.

Stories originally published in SAND have been featured in Best Small Fictions 2015, edited by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Robert Olen Butler, and Best Small Fictions 2016, edited by award-winning author and poet Stuart Dybek. Our journal has also been reviewed by The Review Review.

Specific Guidelines for Submissions Categories:

Poetry: Please send no more than 300 lines of poetry.

Prose: Word count for short stories, essays, and other prose should total under 5,000 words. Unless you’re writing flash fiction or very, very short stories, please only submit one piece.

Art & Photography: All images must be at least 300 dpi and in JPEG format. Please send a maximum of 5 pieces for consideration, but do feel free to include a link to your portfolio, if applicable. If there is an underlying artist’s statement for the pieces you’ve submitted, please also include it in your submission email.

Translations: We accept non-English works which are accompanied by a translation into English, or English works accompanied by a translation into another language. We often present the translation side by side with the original piece in order to highlight the similarities and differences of language and interpretation. Permission must be granted for publication in SAND from both the author and the translator and, if necessary, the author’s publisher.

At this time, we are unable to offer an honorarium for works published in SAND. All rights to your work revert to you after publication.

SAND only accepts submissions through Submittable. To send us your submission, please click the button below. Submit all pieces in a single document (we accept .doc, .docx, or .rtf).

* Please submit work that has not been previously published. We will still consider work that has been published in an online magazine, or that is a translation of a piece that has only previously been published in the original language.
